VALVE STEELS for combustion
engines
These steels are tipically used for valves requiring:
- strenghts with a service temperature in the 700C°
to 800 C° range
- oxidation resistance to chemical etching in their
application environment particularly to lead and to burnt gas
- they need to show sufficient resistance( without
strain) to the stress they are subjected to during the different strokes
of combustion cycle

Martensitic (Al Cr-Si ) application in induction valves and stems of bimetallic exhaust valves |
Austenitic (Al-Cr-Ni-W/Mo-N) application in exhaust valves (subjected to corriosion caused by the contact with hot gasses) or in heads of bimetallic valves. These are often austenitic steels stiffened by precipitation hardening |
Nickel based alloys application in exhaust valves or in heads of bimetallic valves for marine or heavy duty engines |
